Most Popular Car Color Today

June 7, 2018 By Juan Freeman Leave a Comment

As a person who loves cars, you might be wondering what is the most popular car color today. Back in the day, going to a car dealership is like walking into an artist’s vibrant and colorful palette. While there are not as many colors around at present, there still is a wide array of car colors that fit your preference and personality. So if you’re on the hunt for a new vehicle, scroll down to get an idea of the best car color to buy!

Most Popular Car Color: Things You Need to Know

Brief History of Vehicle Colors

Before we proceed, it will be better if you know a bit of history about car colors. In the early years, the main purpose of cars is basically just motorized carriages. They are typically black just like the color of a horse-drawn carriage. The process of making the paint is very complicated, expensive and time-consuming yet, quality of color is very poor it would quickly fade, forcing owner’s to have a new paint job.

It is only then in the early 1920’s when Ford Motors collaborated with the Dupont chemical company to create a substance that can be used to make new car coatings in rainbow colors. This is more durable and the paint even dries up in minutes instead of hours. In the succeeding decades, car owners chose darker, more neutral colors following a cultural and economic pattern.

Popular Car Colors

White, black, and silver are fighting for the top spot as the most popular car colors today. Together, these colors represent half of the cars on the road. The color’s popularity is based on location or climate. Black cars are popular in areas with colder climates such as the northeast. White is more favorable in places like Arizona, Florida, and California where there is plenty of sunshine.

It is also quite interesting to know car color trends have to do something with school spirit. Harrisonburg, VA, which is where James Madison University is located, has the highest percentage of purple cars. Lincoln, Nebraska, where you can find the flagship campus of the University of Nebraska, has the most number of red cars in the U.S. Orange is the most popular car color in the entire state of Tennessee. Presumably, the local’s support for the University of Tennessee has something to do with it.

A state’s political side can be associated with the car’s color choice. New York, Vermont, Connecticut, Minnesota, and New Hampshire loves blue which is the color of Democrats. Nevada, Arizona, and Utah love their red cars.

Things to Ponder

Here are some of the things you might want to consider in choosing the right car color for you:

What is the Safest Color for a Car?

White vehicles have lower chances of crashing than vehicles with low visibility colors like black, gray, green, silver, blue, and red. Although white is the safest car color, all cars can meet a conceivably greater car risk when there is less visibility. This includes driving in bad weather conditions or during nighttime. Black cars are the most accident-prone cars even though some say the color black is an indicator of elegance and style.

Best Car Color to Keep Clean

We all want our cars to look clean all the time, but there are car colors that are easiest to maintain. White, silver, shades of gray, and other light colored cars are more manageable than the darker ones. It takes days or even weeks before dust shows up unless your car gets rained on. White is also the best car color to hide scratches and minor dents. Bright colors help minimize the presence of scratches, especially on a sun-shiny day.

Black, red, and metallic paint are the hardest color to take care of. So if you are living in an area where dust, grime, and mud is always present, it will be better to choose a color that will not need you to clean every other day. This can save you more money by buying less cleaning products or taking it to the car wash and saves you a lot of valuable time.

Car features, specs, and marque play a crucial role when choosing the right car, but nothing excites an owner more than picking the color of the car. Although white, black, gray, and silver are the most popular car colors, there are still owners who pick unusual colors. However, if you have plans to sell your car it would be better to stick with standard colors. Striking and vibrant car colors are a bit harder to sell and might have a low resale value.
